This resuls in irritation, frustrations, anger or verbal and non-verbal aggression.<\/p>\n<p>The differences however, are not the problem. The way we deal with those differences is. Often we don't recognize conflicts as such, or we fail to intervene. Therefore they can escalate, until the situation gets worse is more difficult to handle.<\/p>\n<p>Conflicts are often a <strong>cocktail of different elements<\/strong>. There is more than meets the eye. For instance: emotional reactions to organizational change, agitation due to unclear procedures or expectations, failing leadership, differences in work style, lack of space or safety to speak up or address difficult topics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Group dynamics <\/strong>accelerate the escalation. The atmosphere becomes toxic, people drop out, distrust grows, productvity suffers, because people don't collaborate anymore.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_column_1 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_image_0 et_pb_image et_pb_module et_block_module\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img preset--module--divi-text--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h3>What doesn't work...<\/h3>\n<p><strong>With the best intentions<\/strong>\u00a0we do all sorts of things in conflict situations that do not work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sweep the difficulties under the rug<\/li>\n<li>Patiently wait until tensions blow over<\/li>\n<li>Focus on consensus, harmony, and a good atmosphere\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Not address disturbing behavior<\/li>\n<li>Ventilate and look for support and sympathy\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Keep silent for the sake of peace<\/li>\n<li>'Fix' incidents as quickly as possible and move on<\/li>\n<li>Become overly careful<\/li>\n<li>Punish 'difficult' collaborators or remove them from the team<\/li>\n<li>Try to shift negative dynamics via 1-on-1 conversations<\/li>\n<li>Mediate between two conflicted collaborators and not involve the rest of the team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Frankly speaking, we don't really learn <strong>how to address difficult topics<\/strong> and talk about conflict in a constructive way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there is a way out!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_module space<\/strong> for people to talk about the tensions.<\/p>\n<p>The focus is on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stop further escalation and polarisation<\/li>\n<li>Check interpretations and clarify misunderstandings<\/li>\n<li>Explore the sources of the tensions<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to look at the different dimensions and complexity of a conflict<\/li>\n<li>Make the shift from defensive reactions to curious exploration<\/li>\n<li>Break old protective patterns and choose new behavior<\/li>\n<li>Make an inventory of what is needed to collaborate better<\/li>\n<li>Agree on specific agreements for future functioning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>develop conflict resolution skills<\/h3>\n<p>During the process of conflict resolution, a team can <strong>grow in conflict resolution skills<\/strong>!\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Directly address disturbing behavior<\/li>\n<li>Invest in giving sincere feedback<\/li>\n<li>Differ in opinion in a constructive way<\/li>\n<li>Reflect on a regular basis on the question: how are we collaborating?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Building an open and productive culture\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>By engaging in courageous collective conversations, you <strong>invest in culture change<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Because you are the culture that needs to change! <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_row_3 preset--module--divi-text--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h3>TRAUMA in your organisation - do you recognise this?\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p><span>Trauma dynamics are not so easy to detect, read or understand. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Often organisations don't understand what is going on and how to deal with a situation that seems stuck. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What I often hear is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are 'historical' conflicts that don't get resolved, whatever we try<\/li>\n<li>The culture has become 'toxic' after years of transgressive behavior and people feel helpless\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>There is a strange 'heaviness' in the organisation, but it is hard to talk about it<\/li>\n<li>There is 'something', but we cannot grasp what it is<\/li>\n<li>People talk about 'old pain' and remain stuck in the past<\/li>\n<li>There is a breach in trust<\/li>\n<li>People seem to be in 'survival mode'<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_column_8 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_image_1 et_pb_image et_pb_module et_block_module\"><span (\u2026) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Trauma can result from shock, <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and also from a series of painful and difficult experiences which can be cumulative over time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_testimonial_author\">Angwyn Saint Just<\/div><div class=\"et_pb_testimonial_meta\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_row_7 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_10 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_image_2 et_pb_image et_pb_module et_block_module\"><span class=\"et_pb_image_wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/circlesforconnection.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/shutterstock_531450907.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/circlesforconnection.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/shutterstock_531450907.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/circlesforconnection.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/shutterstock_531450907-980x542.jpg 980w, https:\/\/circlesforconnection.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/shutterstock_531450907-480x265.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" class=\"wp-image-42014\" title=\"shutterstock_531450907\" \/><\/span><\/div><\/div><div class=\"et_pb_column_11 et_pb_column et_pb_column_1_2 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module preset--module--divi-text--default\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h3>\u2018solving\u2019 problems, or is something else required?<\/h3>\n<p><span>Organisations have different strategies in place to deal with difficult situations: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>procedures<\/strong><span> (e.g. informal notifications; formal complaints; disciplinary procedures)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>tools &amp; instruments<\/strong><span> (e.g. risk analysis; climate study) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>professional roles <\/strong><span>(e.g. trusted person; prevention consultant; well-being coaches; internal mediators)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>In addition, there is a need for a relational and a collective approach that focuses on:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>foster <strong>personal leadership and responsibility<\/strong> when people are confronted with inappropriate, impolite or destructive behaviour\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>recognize, address and change <strong>pathological patterns<\/strong> in collaboration <\/span><\/li>\n<li>invest in an <strong>open and healthy culture<\/strong> where difficulties, conflicts and painful experiences can be talked about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span>Time does not heal all wounds...\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span>In order to heal traumatic experiences, it is necessary to give <strong>recognition<\/strong> to the needs, pain and fears of all involved. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An appropriate <strong>social container<\/strong> is required to hold these conversations about painful events.
